Complex Family Planning Fellowship

Meet your Complex Family Planning Fellow

My name is Kerry Caputo and I recently completed the Complex Family Planning Fellowship at Northwestern Memorial Hospital. I want to extend my heartfelt gratitude for your generous support in funding this fellowship which has played a pivotal role in my development as a physician, educator and advocate.

What was your background/education prior to this fellowship?

I attended medical school at the University of Florida College of Medicine and completed my obstetrics and gynecology (OB-GYN) residency at Northwestern University Feinberg School
of Medicine. It was during my residency that I developed a strong interest in complex family planning, leading me to pursue this fellowship.

What have you learned during this fellowship that you will take with you?

Over the past two years, I’ve had the opportunity to further develop the skills, knowledge and perspective necessary to care for patients across the full spectrum of reproductive health.
I was actively involved in medical education during my fellowship, creating a series of mini-lectures for residents and medical students to gain knowledge and comfort in complex family planning topics. I also partnered with the Innovations Laboratory at Northwestern Simulation to design a high-fidelity simulation — an essential tool to increase the skill and confidence of junior OB-GYN residents.

In addition to education and clinical work, this year also strengthened my voice as a patient advocate. I attended the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists’ Congressional Leadership Conference in Washington, D.C. where, I had the privilege of lobbying lawmakers to increase maternal health funding. This experience deepened my understanding of how policy and practice intersect and how crucial it is that clinicians speak up for their patients beyond the exam room.

What has this fellowship meant to you?

This fellowship has been transformative, shaping me into a more capable, compassionate clinician and a more effective advocate and educator. I have grown into a skilled, confident physician who can meet patients where they are and guide them with dignity and care throughout their reproductive lives.

What would you like to share with the donors who supported your fellowship?

I am incredibly grateful for your generosity in making this experience possible. Your support is not only an investment in me, but also Northwestern Memorial Hospital, the patients we serve, the residents I teach, and the broader mission of expanding access to reproductive health care.
